Sharing “Awe”

Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends our understanding of the world. It reminds us of our shared humanity and our connection to something greater than ourselves.
— Dr. Dacher Keltner

Hi Friends,

As the holiday season approaches, it feels like the world has been particularly noisy and overwhelming, especially amidst the whirlwind of the election season. All the more reason I’m excited to share that Illumination is close to opening — and indeed an antidote to all that chaos—a moment to reset, find joy, and reconnect with the people who matter most.

Illumination, 2023

This year’s Illumination is shaping up to be something fresh and increasingly special. We’ve doubled the number of performance weeks, running from November 22 to December 22, thanks to your incredible support. That’s right—loads of opportunities to share this awe-inspiring experience with more friends, loved ones, colleagues, or even employees. It’s not just a show; it’s an immersive concert that invites everyone to pause, breathe, and soak in the holiday season's beauty.

Technical install in progress (November 1, 2024)

Dr. Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at UC Berkeley, talks about how moments of awe connect us to something more expansive than ourselves, and research shows that experiencing awe helps reduce stress and strengthen bonds. I can’t think of a better way to share that feeling than inviting others to join you at Illumination.

This year, we’ve added many fresh features while keeping the magic you remember. The costumes are being crafted with rich, luxurious fabrics to match the regalness of the holidays, and the set is undergoing beautiful transformations, with hundreds of new candles, lanterns, and other structures. The musicians, from a drummer and guitarist to the beloved piano and cello duo, are more integrated into the room, making the whole experience feel even more intimate. And the talented cast—Karisa Fulmer (Girl Group Greats, 2023 Illumination), Gabbi Mack (Six on Broadway), Jong Sang Rheu (Off-Broadway performer), Ali Murphy (Last year’s Illumination pianist), and Aaron Pottenger (new to Prima!)—are bringing their incredible skills and NYC energy to Lancaster, creating a performance bound to leave a lasting impact.

None of this would be possible without your generosity. By supporting Prima, you are helping to enrich our community’s cultural life and sowing the seeds of awe for thousands of people. Your contributions allow us to continue creating experiences that invigorate lives. Special thanks to show sponsors Versatek, M.H. Eby, Garden Spot Communities, and Spark Supply Chain Consulting.

So, as you’re planning your holiday gatherings, I hope you’ll invite those who matter most to join you at Illumination. It’s a truly unforgettable way to celebrate the season, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

With deep gratitude,

Mitch Nugent

Founding Executive Producer
